This is an attractive meadow with a wide variety of trees and shrubs and a wildlife pond with dipping platform. The site extends around three sides of the electricity sub-station on the far north-eastern edge of Welton Parish. If offers excellent opportunities to the local junior school as an outdoor classroom.
Access Point
From the village, follow the road which leads to Watford. Just before the A5 is an electricity sub-station (which is strictly off limits for safety reasons), and the pocket park is right by it.
Rights of Way
None.
Suitability
The site is some distance from the village but there is parking space by the entrance. The entrance is suitable for wheelchair users. Pathways are regularly mown to facilitate access.
History
The site was originally purchased by East Midlands Electricity to allow the sub-station to be extended. It was then realised that additional electricity plant was not needed on the site. The Regional Manager of EME heard about the Pocket Park scheme whilst attending a nature conservation conference at Castle Ashby and made contact with the project officer. The site was offered to the village of Welton who gladly accepted.
Management Objectives
To manage the meadow to increase its biodiversity of butterflies and small mammals. To create and manage a wildlife pond with a dipping platform. To increase the variety of trees and shrubs on the site to soften the visual effect of the safety fence around the high voltage compound. To provide facilities for people to enjoy this peaceful haven. To encourage the local school to use the site for nature study.
Special Wildlife
Bee Orchid, Birds-foot Trefoil, Fox, Frogs, Dragonflies.
