| Hedgerow Restoration Project is hailed a success |
This is part of a £50,000 project being lead by leader of the council Councillor Jim Harker to see hundreds of new trees in the county. The first phase includes around £7,000 of trees being planted at country parks and pocket parks in the county with the remaining money being spent next year on tree-planting projects with parish councils and schools who have expressed an interest in the scheme.
Hedgerows are important historical, landscape and wildlife features. If left unmanaged by become gappy and a poor wildlife habitat.
The hedges were restored by coppicing the exisiting plants and planting new saplings. It is hoped that in about 10 years time these hedges will be in a suitable condition to be traditional hedge laid.
Laying creates a thick hedge particualry at the base and at the first few meters. This provides a suitable home for over-wintering hedgehogs, amphibians and reptiles as well as minibeasts. The thick hedges also provides shelter for nesting birds.
This method of hedge management also helps to prolong the life of hedgerow plants.
